In the United States alone there are over 6,000 hospitals with an estimated 120 million electronic devices. Each hospital has an average of over 2,000 devices that are at end-of-life (according to hospital standards) for a total of 14 million e-devices retired each year in the U.S.

These devices are essential components of the healthcare system and crucial to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients. But what happens to these devices when they are retired?

These electronic devices contain hazardous materials. Almost any product with a circuit board is now banned from landfills and is considered hazardous waste, requiring special handling. And just as important, they may also contain sensitive patient data.
